Clinical Audits Save Lives

This week (20 – 24 November 2017) is Clinical Audit Awareness Week. It is coordinated by the Healthcare Quality Improvement Partnership (HQIP) to enable Trusts, Health Boards, audit providers and other organisations to celebrate the best in clinical audit and encourage collaboration in improving patient care.

Clinical audits play a significant role in the strong governance of EMRTS Cymru. Alongside emergency anaesthesia and blood product audits that are carried out for every relevant case, we are introducing additional clinical audits relating to regular practice - including adherence to standards surrounding procedural sedation and post-resuscitation care.

With designated consultant and CCP leads for each audit, they facilitate continual service improvements, with tangible changes to our practice where necessary.  A number of audit projects have also been supported whilst medical students and junior doctors have spent time on placement with the Service.

In addition, we contribute to, and benefit from, national audits including TARN and ICNARC.  This includes linking data from these national audits through the SAIL databank, allowing us to evaluate our Service and continue our longer-term data research. This has been possible thanks to the support of the Farr Institute (The Centre for Improvement in Population Health through E-records Research – CIPHER) at Swansea University, and in particular Professor Ronan Lyons (Director, Farr Institute CIPHER), Dr Richard Fry (Senior Research Officer) and Jane Lyons (Research Assistant).

Examples of this include:

Award for Welsh Life-Saving Data Analysis Presented in Scotland

If you work in NHS Wales and are interested in how audits form part of EMRTS Cymru please contact us, join us at one of our Clinical Governance days.
